Mine Planning

MineLock and strategic partners have extensive experience in the field of geological exploration. The key services offered within the management of exploration drilling projects include literature reviews, geological mapping, borehole site selection, management of drill contractors, borehole core logging and sampling, management of surveying of boreholes (collar surveys and down hole geophysical surveys), geotechnical logging and advice on the laboratory analyses.

We provide geological modelling services. We provide geological modelling services and our geologists and mining engineers have experience in:

  • resource and reserve reporting according to international reporting codes,

  • structure and quality model generation,

  • resource and reserve estimation (SAMREC, JORC, NI 43-101),

  • resource to reserve conversion, interface between geological resource modelling and mine reserve modelling,

  • SAMVAL valuations,

  • compilation of geological reports,

  • mine design, and

  • Competent Person Reports (CPR).

Our services include the management of various phases and studies in the life cycle of a geological/mining project. The phases consist of conceptual mine studies – preliminary financial modelling and sensitivity analysis, technical reviews, pre-feasibility studies, feasibility studies, independent technical reviews and due diligence studies.

Environmental Engineering

Environmental engineering services form the backbone of most projects we undertake at MineLock. The engineering services can be done to a conceptual or detailed level and include the development of stormwater management plans and the designs of related infrastructure (pollution control dams, silt traps, etc.), water treatment, constructed wetlands / wetland reinstatement, design of barrier systems, capping of solid and mining waste facilities, mining residue deposition strategies, airspace modelling and rehabilitation options analysis / trade-offs.

At MineLock we specialize in engineering that supports Environmental Authorisations and Water Use Licence applications. We have the capibility to see any project through, from regulatory authorization to Full time construction monitoring during the implementation phase.

Mine Rehabilitation and Closure

Rehabilitation and closure planning, as well as the associated costing for rehabilitation and closure has been elevated to a new level with the promulgation of GN 1147 (Regulation in terms of National Environmental Management Act) on 20 November 2015.

Local legal drivers such as the above-mentioned new legislation and other acts that now also apply to mining.

Our services include:

  • Operational rehabilitation plans with the specific purpose of seamless translation of operations to closure, as well as to progressively reduce the closure liability during operations

  • Determining the financial provision for prospecting, exploration, mining or production operations in line with the NEMA regulations

  • High-level costings to determine financial liabilities to secure bonds

  • Third party reviews of closure / remediation costs, undertaken as part of due diligence reviews to inform decision making

  • Development of rehabilitation strategies and implementation plans required by the Department of Water Affairs

  • Cash flow projections to illustrate the rehabilitation period and capital expenditure and

  • The development of water treatment costs

Geomorphic Design

Materials movement can account for up to 80 % of closure costs for open pits. We specialize in rehabilitation-related materials movement optimisation to limit these costs as far as possible in a long-term sustainable manner. Our services include:

  • Materials balance and optimisation

  • Detailed implementation of landform designs

  • Predictive mine simulation to optimise material movement and inform concurrent backfill elevations to limit material shortage at end of life

  • Geomorphic and cover design

  • Soil categorisation

  • Unsaturated flow modelling

  • Cover design

  • Erosion evolution modelling

  • Recharge minimisation

  • Technical guidance to implement designs

This service offering involves the integration of scientific and engineering approaches and solutions for sustainable rehabilitation and closure measures.

Mechanical Engineering

Minelock offers expert mechanical engineering services with vast experience in mining & mineral processing, pulp & paper, smelter, sugar & timber industries as well as the public sector.

Our services include:

  • Feasibility Studies

  • Concept Designs

  • Detail Designs

  • Design Reviews

  • Plant Improvements (Reliability)

  • Failure Analysis

  • Project Management

  • Purpose made material handling equipment can also be designed and supplied.  A typical example is the “SafeGrab” series developed for the safe removal of oversize ore or bridges from primary crushers.

Structural Engineering

The role of a structural engineer today involves a significant understanding of both static and dynamic loading, and the structures that are available to resist them. The complexity of modern structures often requires a great deal of creativity from the engineer in order to ensure the structures support and resist the loads to which they are subjected.

At MineLock we offer the following services:

  • Concrete framed buildings

  • Water retaining structures

  • Heavy and light industrial buildings

  • Canopy design

  • Structural integrity assessments and

  • Foundation and basement designs
